Catherine McAuley College
Bold Architecture were engaged by Rockhampton Catholic Education to masterplan a new catholic secondary educational facility on the site of the former Sugar Research Institute & Residence (SRI) in Mackay (registered with Qld State Heritage). The master plan for the college strategically achieves the complete campus across 5 stages of development and preserves and repurposes all heritage significant elements of the site.
The overarching design philosophy that Bold Architecture applied to the master planning of the new College can best be described as ‘School as City’. Just as a vibrant and prospering city or community can be defined and remembered for its main streets, laneways, market places, town squares and civic buildings etc, so to can a school campus. It is the articulation of these public spaces, sight lines and routes through the campus that contribute to the experience and identity of the school. A school is more than just a collection of buildings. The buildings assist in defining the public spaces and movement routes which in turn define the atmosphere and experience of the school.
Together with the ‘School as City’ design philosophy, other significant design principles of flexibility, connectivity, legibility, appropriateness, and desirable spaces to occupy were implemented in the first stage of the school development.
